Coaching Tips

1) Be a leader, not just the person in charge (there’s a difference). Show your players what it takes to be quality individuals through example, not a bunch of talk.

2) Have a “Let’s Go” attitude rather than a “Get Going” attitude with your players. (a key free basketball coaching tip)

3) Be patient. Allow time for your team to create the good habits you’re teaching and to break the bad habits they may come in with.

4) Remember that almost any system you employ will succeed as long as your players are well-schooled in the fundamentals.

5) As the coach, you must develop a good over-all knowledge of the game.

6) Give every player a fair shot and reward them each opportunity they earn.

7) Always instill with your players that hard work is one of the most basic aspects of success. (not only a free basketball coaching tip, but a life tip as well)

8) Don’t overwhelm your players with too much. It’s better to be great at a few things than mediocre at many.

9) Don’t worry about any opponent. Get prepared for them properly and let them be the ones worrying about facing you.

10) Learn how to be a good teacher. Show your team what to do, observe, then criticize and correct in a positive manner until they form the right habits through repetition.

11) Develop a team spirit that no one is greater than the team. Have players understand that egos have no place. Teamwork will get them where they want to go. Not individual glory. Use examples of teams that have beaten other teams made up of so-called “stars”.

12) Don’t lead with an iron-fist but don’t let your team do anything they please. Find that middle ground of toughness and caring.

13) Pay attention to the details. Demand that your team won’t let the little things slide.

14) Formulate a vision for your team and get good at communicating that vision to your players. They need to know where this ship is headed and what is expected of them.

15) Be sure your team is conditioned properly. Physically and mentally.

16) Keep your practices and relationship with your players positive and enthusiastic. But be careful that you balance in your leadership and your focus on accountability. Make sure you keep the team’s respect.
